Living on The Edge
Living on the edge of The New Forest , as well as my daily constitutional by the sea , when I have ” me” time I like to go for a wander amongst the ancient woodland . Nothing better than a walk amongst the tall trees to calm the mind , body and soul. Whilst wandering one day, I decided to start looking for a local crafts person who made pieces from wood from The New Forest so that we could showcase his work in the gallery.
Mr Graham Turner – New Forest Wood Turner
Et voila! Right under my nose , or in fact, right down the street , exhbiting in the Hampshire Art Studio week , was Mr Graham Turner. I was familiar with Graham and his work as he had kindly kept the twins busy showing them the art of pyrography the year before , whilst I looked around the exhibition and fate had it that I spied his work again this year! Synchronicity some would say.
So here is a little bit of info about Graham …..as told by Graham!
“My focus over the last two years has been on Wood Turning with a twist. This means that I use a mixture wood turning lathes and hand tools. I have also designed and created my own jig that makes it easier to keep the twists uniform. I also like the idea of creating shadows and patterns on the walls from the lamps.
The wood I use comes from around the New Forest and it is cut up and air dried at my house in Sway in the New Forest, this can take a number of years.
My inspiration came from my grandfather who started his apprenticeship as a pattern maker in 1914, I was always fascinated with his workshop and the barley twist items that he had made by hand. As of 2019 I finally acquired my grandfather’s tools so use them in my work as well.
Ar one stage, I did an Apprenticeship at Rolls Royce working on aero engines; however I went astray some where and ended up in IT AND Management! At the age of 50 after being made redundant for the second time, I went back to working with my hands and trying to be creative.
I am a New Forest Marque member.”
