Animal Friends - John Parkes

In 1977, Animal Friends was started by Biddy Picard. Initially helping out on a temporary basis, John Parkes and Barbara Pilkington eventually took over in 1980. They produce a wide range of birds and animals, each individually hand-crafted. John is especially noted for his larger pieces of work such as gannets and cormorants.

John has been a ceramic artist for over twenty years, and his vision is to produce pieces which capture the character and the nature of the subject without making them too stylised or over-realistic. His clifftop home in West Cornwall is close to the habitat of the birds and animals which he recreates in stoneware clay.
