Mel West

Quite contrastingly to her life as an artist today, Mel West’s career began working in London for American Law firms, then moving back to the place where she grew up, Cornwall, to work with the civil service.

After having children, Mel decided against returning to the office, instead taking a refresher course in stained glass with the intention of starting a hobby, having had some experience working with stained glass in her early 20’s.

Over 20 years, this hobby has turned into a mini business; Mel worked with stained, beach and recycled glass before discovering fused glass.

Fused glass is layering sheets of art glass, embellishing it with crushed glass, powdered glass and metals and then firing them in a kiln at a high temperature to create one solid piece.

Influenced by the beautiful Cornish coastal landscape, Mel creates pieces which are wonderfully happy, vibrant and colourful!

Trade Winds Gallery are delighted to be part of the Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) 250 Club. SAS is a marine conservation charity working with communities to protect oceans, waves, beaches and marine life. We are really proud to support the work that they carry out, such as beach clean ups, education and campaigning, and look forward to continuing to be part of the positive change!
