Sam Gabriel

Throughout the many twists and turns of Sam Gabriel’s life, the passion for her art has remained a constant and she is now in the fantastic position of being able to dedicate more of her time to it.

Sam lives on the South coast in an area known for being ‘by sea and forest enchanted’, the New Forest. It is here that she draws inspiration from her daily walks along the coastal paths of the ancient salt marshes close to her home.

Captivated by the abundance of wildlife and ever-changing beauty of the area year-round, Sam says,

“I feel incredibly grateful for the window into this magical world that I am afforded each morning- a world where the light and the mood of the sea are never the same from one day to the next, where the myriad of wading birds are always busy on the shoreline and where I can look up and see the silent grace of seabirds in flight. Where the smell of salt on the breeze is omnipresent and the peace and quiet is punctured by lapping waves, the cry of an ouster catcher or the chatter of skylarks. It is a world full of beautiful textures from rugged sea grasses to bleached driftwood, rocks worn smooth by the tide or the gnarled bark of wind weathered trees. My love for this amazing place is never ending, it is part of my soul and this is reflected time and time again in my work.”

Sam creates using mixed media; layers of plaster applied to boards, designs sketched and then relief carved, and finally painted. She loves to experiment with texture and colour, with her chosen medium encompassing both surface feel and tint shade. This technique allows her the freedom of creating backgrounds that mimic the extraordinary patinas of the natural world whilst at the same time providing contrast to her main images.

Over the many moons that have passed since Sam completed her art foundation course, her person style and medium, has evolved through many guises from pen and ink drawing, watercolours, calligraphy, illustrations and acrylics to wood carving and working with clay. In addition to her far-reaching artistic experience, Sam is proud to hold a diploma in interior design and through this has significant experience with decorative paint finishes. Her latest technique is a combination of all sorts she has picked up over her experience, and her favourite so far!
