Steve Payter

Steve’s interest in enamel started with jewellery designs, but he soon began to take the more unusual and demanding route of creating ambitious larger scale contemporary pieces of art for the wall.

His work falls into two categories – abstract sea and sky inspired landscapes based on his Cornish surroundings and, contrastingly, the complex geometric images that come from within, often influenced by the music he’s listening to.

Starting with a copper panel as a blank canvas, he mixes enamel resin powders to create unique colours and, either using hand-made guides or working freehand, he sifts the powders onto the copper – element by element, layer by layer – before repeatedly firing. Using a hand-held butane torch, rather than a kiln, retains greater control over the firing process to craft the image to his design.
Honing and developing techniques to achieve his vision is the challenge that constantly drives him forward.

Trade Winds Gallery are delighted to be part of the Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) 250 Club. SAS is a marine conservation charity working with communities to protect oceans, waves, beaches and marine life. We are really proud to support the work that they carry out, such as beach clean ups, education and campaigning, and look forward to continuing to be part of the positive change!
